- If you weld once a month in a garage, a Miller Multimatic or a Bobcat is probably overkill. A well-reviewed import machine may serve you fine at a lower price — if you can tolerate longer lead times for parts.
- If you're just starting out and budgets are tight, consider spending on safety gear first (helmet, gloves, jacket) before a premium welding power source. You can do good work with a mid-range machine; you can't un-burn your eyes.
- If your main concern is portability for remote work, evaluate whether a battery welder (limited as they are) or a generator-and-standard-welder combo might be more practical than a dedicated engine-driven unit.
Miller's strength is industrial reliability and multi-process versatility (MIG/TIG/stick). If you need occasional, low-duty-cycle work, those strengths may not translate into value for you.
What I'd Do Differently
If I could go back to 2017, the single thing I'd do differently is start with the end in mind. Buy the best machine we could afford at the time, not the cheapest machine we could get away with — because the cheapest option almost never ends up being the least expensive.
