1. Is the Miller 251 MIG welder still worth buying?
If you're welding steel and want a dedicated MIG machine, yes—provided the unit is in good shape. The 251 is an older 250-amp class MIG welder, and a clean one will run .035 wire through 3/8" steel all day without drama. If you need AC/DC TIG on aluminum or you're switching processes all week, it's the wrong tool. I went back and forth on this exact decision with a client in March 2024. 2. What can a 251 MIG actually do?

Duty cycle tells you how many minutes out of a 10-minute period the welder can run at a given amperage before it overheats. A machine rated at 250 amps with a 60% duty cycle means six minutes of welding at that output, then four minutes of rest. If the duty cycle is 40%, you're resting more than you're welding—and the machine is working harder than you are. 4. Is a customized tool box worth the extra money?
For a mobile welder, yes—if the customization solves a specific problem. I had one built with angled slots for MIG gun liners, a spring-loaded drawer for tungsten, and a cutout for a couple of 4-1/2 inch grinders. The truck also carries my Miller auto-darkening helmet and spare gloves. A local fabricator quoted me $1,400 in February 2026. 8. Do I need a Miller generator welder for mobile repairs?
If your work takes you to sites without power, a generator welder is worth the extra weight on the truck. Miller's Trailblazer and Bobcat lines combine a generator with CC/CV output, so you can run wire and stick jobs and power lights or a grinder from the same unit. I used a Bobcat on a rooftop repair with the building's power shut down, and it saved a two-day delay. But don't buy one if you're working in a shop all day. A dedicated plug-in welder gives you cleaner arc starts for less money. Generator welders are a specialty tool, not a default. That's the same advice I'd give about any Miller welding machine: match the machine to the 80% job you do, not the 20% you wish you did.
